What are Individual sessions?
Individual sessions are an opportunity to take time to connect with you and all that you are experiencing.
In individual sessions, I can meet you exactly where you are at and offer guidance and processes to allow you to explore what is current for you, work through difficulties past and present, and simply connect with yourself, beyond the thinking mind.
You are held gently and securely in whatever is arising for you. No topic is off limits, no emotion is unwelcome.
Who are Art Therapy sessions for?
ANYONE can benefit from individual Art therapy sessions. A common question asked - do I have to be good at Art? Not at all. I don't consider myself an Artist, yet I benefit a lot from expressing and exploring in this way. It's the act of expressing that matters, as well as the meaning and insight gained, not what it looks like. Though anyone could benefit from Art Therapy, it might be particularly suitable for:
Those who prefer less talking in therapy or have felt that more traditional forms of therapy didn’t suit them.
Those who feel something is 'missing' or ‘wrong’ but can’t figure out what it is
Those who want to tap into unmet potential.
Those who are experiencing symptoms, ailments, or illness and want to connect with the body and explore these.
Those who want to deeply explore themselves, beyond the mind.
Those who want to work through something where talking and thinking haven't yet helped.
Sessions are open to people aged 18 and older. I offer sessions inclusive of all abilities. I will work with clients to adjust processes and spaces for those who are experiencing physical disability.
What does a session look like?
During a session I am guided by you and what is unfolding in the moment. What is present for you, what is worrying you, and what you would like to explore. There is no set framework for a session so that it can move and shift to meet your unique needs. For this reason, every session looks different. To give you a rough idea though a session may play out as follows:
We begin by taking a few breaths to ground and arrive in the space.
A chance for you to talk about what you would like to explore, what brought you to the session, and what is present for you. (note - it is not necessary to come up with a set idea of what you'd like to explore).
There often comes a moment where we have explored through talking and reached a pause where it can be helpful to move into an art expression or similar. This is an opportunity to tap into what is beyond the conscious, everyday mind and see what arises in relation to what we have been exploring. Often a new perspective can be gained this way or simply moving some energy. The expression often begins with a short meditation that is created based on the content of the discussion. There is then an opportunity to draw whatever comes. (note - I will guide you in this. What the product is at the end isn't the important part. The fact that it came from you is.
Once you have finished there is space to talk about your expression and experience and I might ask you some questions to more deeply explore your expression. (Note - Your expression is yours. You may find meaning in it or may not, either is perfectly ok. I won't suggest meaning as this is personal to you. After all yellow means something different to everyone right?)
At the end of the session I'll recap your journey and any discoveries that might have been made.
We'll close with a few breaths if this feels right.
If you attend another session, I will recap what happened in the last session and from there you are free to talk about that or bring up something different. Remember this is YOUR session. You're in the driver's seat and I'm there to hold the space as you drive your bus. In other words, you are always completely free to choose what you would like in the session and I will support that.

Preparing for an Online session
When you choose an online session for Art Therapy, a few materials will be needed. Don't worry though, these are not extensive and if all you have is pen and paper it's ok. It's definitely enough. You will gain results through the process, it doesn't matter how colourful the product is! If you would like to gather some materials, below is a list of things you might like to collect:
Paper - this one is essential, A3 is great, but A4 is adequate. Unless you're planning on painting, any thickness is ok.
Pastels, pencils, textas, paint. Choose one of these.
Items from the park, beach, and garden - you can collect some items from nature if you like. It's a wonderful medium and completely free!
If you would like to purchase some materials, below is a site that offers a range of choices that can be shipped to you. Their menu is quite easy to browse. The link will take you to a range of soft pastels, one of my favourites! If you have Kmart, Dollars, and Sense, or similar stores nearby, these also have a good range.
